The sculptures in AGRO BONGO are comprised of everyday objects that taken out of their context transcend their original function to emphasize the physicality of form. In every sculpture there is both a visual balance between the materials and colors used, and a preoccupation with how the piece is constructed to create that equilibrium.
In DeLucia’s Untitled (Fence with Mops) the physical texture of the mop heads is juxtaposed with the severity of the industrial metal fence. Similarly in LeWitt’s Untitled (Two Cats) there is a visceral friction created with the use of electrical tape restricting the softness of the multi-colored sponges. Both suffused with an unexpected sense of humor.
Giberson’s Forget Yellow implies a human scale and it’s absence through the specific arrangement of the equally color saturated pants. The rectangular negative space in Forget Yellow is repeated back in Smith’s (Untitled) aquarium tank and two white platforms. The various materials that Smith uses, the murky water that incongruously reveals two baseball caps and the hats balanced precariously on a shell formation, make silent statements about the objects themselves.
The uniform orange of the bristles in DeLucia’s Untitled (Push Brooms) introduce a plane of color that is reiterated in Duerksen’s rich red socks and flat green wax surface in Bouquet and can also be seen in the abrupt smooth surface of the decapitated heads in Frazier’s Faces. Frazier emphasizes her process with her use of unrefined rubber. Contained in the way in which it is hung are the conflicting aspects of the work – both sinister and hilarious.
Mundane objects infused with whimsy and melancholy.
